EU Data Regulators Slam Google Over Privacy Policy: It?s ?Too Large? And Users Need More Control

Google logo 215Authorities in Europe today kicked off a fresh wave of scrutiny over Google's privacy policy and called for changes to be made in how Google manages user data, describing Google's scope as "too large". But they also stopped short of saying Google is acting illegally in how it manages privacy. France's data protection authority, the Commission Nationale de l'Informatique (CNIL), today published a list of recommendations for the company in the area of user privacy, following an investigation that began earlier this year.

Cavalcade of Stars Hits OFA Website

Obama is pulling out the big guns just in time for the second presidential debate. The president has tapped his network of celebrity supporters, releasing a slew of star-studded ads on the Obama for America campaign website.

At least five videos in the past few days have been posted on Obama's campaign YouTube channel. They cover topics including early voting, gay rights, and the importance of getting out and voting (for Obama, of course.)

Rap mogul Jay- Z, long-time supporter and friend of the Obamas , released a special wed ad supporting the president called "The Power of Our Voice." The ad which plays upon the importance of an individual's voice and vote shows clips of Jay-Z's "Made in America Festival" in early September where the rapper stood on stage as Jumbotrons of the president's face touted the success of Jay-Z and others who "worked hard, learned from their mistakes and just plain refused to quite."

The most celeb-filled ad, titled "LGBT Americans for Obama," shows vocal celebrities from the LGBT community such as Jane Lynch ("Glee"), Jesse Tyler Ferguson ("Modern Family") and Chaz Bono, touting the advancements Obama has made for the LGBT community as well as being the first U.S. President to openly support gay marriage.

Tune in to ABCNews.com on Tuesday for livestreaming coverage of the second 2012 Presidential Town Hall Debate in Hempstead, N.Y. Coverage kicks off with ABC News' live preview show at noon, and full debate coverage begins at 8 p.m.

Though the ads are sensitive in nature, displaying personal accounts of struggles as members of the gay community, a subtle jab at the president's Republican contender, Mitt Romney was not to be left out.

"You know all it takes is someone like Mitt Romney in the White House," Lynch says, "and we can roll back rights, we can lose them."

This ad is just one of five released yesterday on the official Barack Obama YouTube channel. Ricky Martin, Ashley Judd, Billy Jean King and Jay-Z have also contributed to the Obama for America-funded web page speaking about everything from bullying to voter registration.

"To me the idea of America is that no matter who you are, what you look like, or where you come from, you can make it if you try. Jay-Z did, he didn't come from power of privilege. He got ahead because he worked hard, learned from his mistakes, and just plain refused to quit." Barack Obama touts in the ad followed by Jay-Z speaking about the importance of exercising the right to vote.

This is not the first time that Barack Obama has had stars speak out on his behalf . Legendary actor Tom Hanks narrated a 17-minute Obama campaign film released in March complimenting the president's accomplishments, as did Sarah Jessica Parker.

Minecraft creator shows test footage of '0x10c' space sim, dishes early details video

Gamers have been waiting on tenterhooks for Markus "Notch" Persson's next offering, titled 0x10c, and while the Minecraft creator has detailed some aspects of the upcoming game, even he's not sure exactly how it'll end up. Newly released video footage (after the break) shows a first-person shooter aboard a spaceship, and the creators told PC Gamer that they'd "really like for stuff to go wrong," so that players can use creativity and resource-gathering, Minecraft-style, to fix it. Persson also said that the ship would contain a fully-programmable 16-bit computer (which sounds a bit like a recent Minecraft mod), and that multiplayer would be added early in the development. Apart from that, though, the team admitted "we don't know where 0x10c is really headed," and that they shouldn't "raise too many people's expectations." Based on the rampant speculation so far, it seems like that ship may have already sailed.

New Android apps worth downloading: Pinkberry & Shadowgun: DeadZone (beta)

Here are a couple of Android apps with which to start the week off right. Pinkberry hit Google Play with their official app for the frozen yogurt chain and it?s especially fun for loyal customers. We?ve also got Shadowgun: DeadZone, a beta version of the new multiplayer shooter from Madfinger Games. You?ll need a Tegra 3 device, but you can help them polish the game and the network code before its official release.

Pinkberry (Free)

What?s it about? The popular frozen yogurt chain now offers an Android app which lets you enjoy rewards, cool features, and exclusive offers.

What?s cool? You can search for flavors and stores nearby and pay for your yogurt with your phone. You?ll also be the first to know about new flavor launches or when your favorite flavor returns to a nearby store. The rewards side of things is pretty cool and offers a free small yogurt just for registering, a free small yogurt with toppings after every tenth purchase and even one on your birthday!

Who is it for? Clearly, folks who love to eat at Pinkberry will appreciate their official app, especially people who sign-up for their loyalty program because of the bonus rewards they can gain for using it.

What?s it like? Competing yogurt store, Red Mango, also has a dedicated Android app complete with loyalty rewards. There is also a yogurt chain called Orange Leaf with an official app, but it doesn?t really offer much.

Shadowgun: DeadZone (Free)

What?s it about? Here?s your chance to beta-test the brand new Shadowgun game, and help out with its development before it?s released to everyone.

What?s cool? The game is out soon, so if you want to be one of the first people to play it, why not download it? A little bug-crunching will help ensure the final, shipped product is better. This time, it?s a third-person multiplayer shooter which promises plenty of action. You can play as either a soldier, mutant, assassin or dancer and compete in either death match or zone control across two maps using one of seven different weapons.

Who is it for? Fans of the first Shadowgun game who want to get in on the sequel?s multiplayer action will definitely want to check it out. However, you will need a Tegra 3 device to play along.

What?s it like? Shadowgun and Shadowgun THD (optimized for Tegra 3 devices) are still available and offer plenty of gun-wielding action, but without the multiplayer element. Another popular Madfinger title worth a look is Dead Trigger.

if you?re not writing about werewolves, no one wants to publish your work. I wasn?t speaking to an expert, but someone on the periphery of the business. I?m not a book worm so maybe I?m part of the problem. I?ve heard others say you can?t get published without an agent, and agents are as choosy about the clients they accept as publishers used to be about manuscripts that they publish. I?m not sure I buy the argument entirely?? we certainly don?t have a shortage of new books coming out. Is self-publishing the cause?? making it too easy in some ways to publish and flooding the market ? or the solution? Just wondering aloud.

Pakistani schoolgirl shot by Taliban sent to UK for treatment

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - The Pakistani schoolgirl shot by Taliban gunmen for pushing for girls to be educated has been sent to the United Kingdom for medical treatment, a military spokesman said on Monday.

The spokesman said in a statement that 14-year-old Malala Yousufzai, whose shooting has drawn widespread condemnation, will require prolonged care to fully recover physically and psychologically.

An air ambulance transporting Yousufzai, provided by the United Arab Emirates, had departed from Islamabad and was heading for the United Kingdom, said the spokesman.

"The panel of doctors recommended that Malala be shifted abroad to a UK center which has the capability to provide integrated care to children who have sustained severe injury," said the spokesman in a statement.

An attack by about 50 militants on a police outpost near the large northwestern city of Peshawar on Sunday night highlighted Pakistan's struggle to contain the Taliban and its allies. At least six policemen were killed.

Yousufzai, a cheerful schoolgirl who had wanted to become a doctor before agreeing to her father's wishes that she strive to be a politician, has become a potent symbol of resistance against the Taliban's efforts to deprive girls of an education.

Pakistanis have held some protests and candlelight vigils but most government officials have refrained from publicly criticising the Taliban by name over the attack, in what critics say is a lack of resolve against extremism.

Opponents of Pakistan's government and military say the shooting is another example of the state's failure to tackle militancy, the biggest threat to the stability of the nuclear-armed South Asian country.

The shooting of Yousufzai was the culmination of years of campaigning that had pitted the young girl against one of Pakistan's most ruthless Taliban commanders, Maulana Fazlullah.

Fazlullah and his faction of the Pakistani Taliban took over Yusufzai's native Swat Valley in 2009 after reaching an agreement with the government which gave them de facto control of the former tourist spot.

Fazlullah imposed the Taliban's austere version of Islam there, blowing up girls' schools and publicly executing those deemed immoral. The army later launched a major offensive in Swat, forcing many Taliban fighters to flee.

MELTED AWAY

Fazlullah's men simply melted away across the porous border to Afghanistan. Earlier this year, they kidnapped and beheaded 17 Pakistani soldiers in one of several cross-border raids that have become a new security headache for Pakistan.

Yousufzai continued speaking out despite the danger. As her fame grew, Fazlullah tried everything he could to silence her. The Taliban published death threats in the newspapers and slipped them under her door. But she ignored them.

The Taliban say that's why they sent assassins, despite a tribal code forbidding the killing of women.

Taliban sources said Fazlullah ordered two men specialising in high-profile assassinations to kill Yousufzai.

Pakistan's Taliban, who are linked to al Qaeda, has been fighting for years to topple the U.S.-backed government and establish the kind of rule they imposed in Swat.

The United States and other Western allies who give Pakistan billions of dollars in aid have been pushing Islamabad to crack down harder on the Taliban, al Qaeda and other groups that have formed a complex web of militancy.

Pakistan says Western criticism of its performance is unjustified, and that it has sacrificed more than any other country that joined the U.S. war on militancy after the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Thousands of soldiers and civilians have been killed.

The attack on Yousufzai has angered many Pakistanis, raising questions over whether the incident could sharply turn public opinion against the militants and give the military a big edge.

But many experts argue the war on militancy can only be won if the government strengthens the fragile economy and creates jobs to ensure that fewer people join radical groups who exploit disillusionment with the state.

The Taliban struck again on Sunday night, attacking the police outpost near Peshawar with rocket-propelled grenades and gunfire. Security officials said at least six policemen were killed, including two who were beheaded.

Seven policemen are still missing and presumed kidnapped. Several police cars and an armoured vehicle were torched.

The Taliban has been blamed for many suicide bombings across Pakistan and have also staged sophisticated, high-profile attacks on the military, one of the biggest in the world.

Pakistan's interior minister said police had despatched guards to protect journalists who had been threatened by Taliban militants angered by coverage of Yousufzai's case.

The Taliban, based mostly in the unruly ethnic Pashtun tribal areas near the Afghan border, have said they would now try to kill her father, a headmaster of a girls' school in Swat.
