Google increases Chrome's security, singles out shady browser extensions

DNP Google increases Chrome's security, singles out shady browser extensions

We know Google isn't afraid to make it rain for the sake of Chrome's security, but today's provisions appear to be an inside job. Laying the smack down on toxic browser extensions, the company introduced a new set of security measures that label applications in violation of its safety guidelines as malware. These potential threats try to bypass the browser's silent installation blockers by manipulating its management settings. Once installed, the malicious software is enabled by default and cannot be removed or disabled from within Chrome. Google cautions that within a week people will begin seeing download alerts when attempting to install an identified threat. In the meantime, we suggest you start making plans to check out your current extensions just to be sure your setup has a clean bill of health.

The Grammy goes to... the Library of Congress

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The music industry is honoring the Library of Congress with a special Grammy Award on Wednesday night for its work over the past decade to preserve historic audio recordings, along with honors for Jennifer Hudson.

The Recording Academy planned to present its Grammys on the Hill Award to the library at an event in Washington, featuring appearances by producer Clive Davis, singer Yolanda Adams and others. The group is honoring Hudson with a Recording Artist Coalition Award for her charity work and will salute York Community High School near Chicago for its outstanding music program.

The Grammys on the Hill Awards are meant to connect the music industry with the world of policy and politics in Washington. The presentation will feature a tribute performance by former "American Idol" judge Kara DioGuardi and songwriters Angela Hunte and Victoria Shaw

Daryl Friedman, the Recording Academy's chief lobbyist in Washington, said the library's National Recording Registry goes beyond its practical purpose of ensuring that recordings are preserved for generations to come.

"It raises the profile of great American recordings from all genres, even spoken word, great speeches, great music," he said. "It just brings attention to this incredible wealth of riches we have in our American culture."

The Grammy Foundation pushed for legislation in Congress more than 10 years ago to create the preservation program at the library. So far, 375 audio recordings have been preserved through the program for their historic, artistic or cultural significance. This year's inductees include Simon and Garfunkel's album "Sounds of Silence" and Chubby Checker's dance hit "The Twist."

The recordings are housed at the library's Packard Campus for Audio Visual Conservation built partially in a bunker in Culpeper, Va. The facility houses more than 6 million items, including about 3.5 million sound recordings.

Past honorees have included Garth Brooks, Don Henley, Vice President Joe Biden, Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin and California Rep. Darrell Issa for supporting music policies.

Friedman said Hudson has stood out for supporting her own charities, as well as the Grammy Foundation and its work.

"She is an outstanding vocalist, of course, an amazing actress, but also really a committed philanthropist," he said. "It's just her generous heart, her spirit and her talent."

TSX hits five-month low as resources dive on growth worries

By John Tilak

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canada's main stock index fell to a near five-month low on Wednesday in a broad selloff, with resource stocks showing the biggest declines, on mounting worries about global economic growth and weak U.S. earnings.

Oil prices also tumbled on demand concerns, and weighed on oil and gas shares, which dropped 2.6 percent.

Investors were disappointed by U.S. quarterly reports from companies such as Bank of America Corp and Yahoo Inc . <.n/>

Toronto stocks are down almost 4 percent this year as weak commodity prices have weighed on resource shares, which make up about 40 percent of the index.

"It's just a very skittish market," said Diana Avigdor, portfolio manager and head of trading at Barometer Capital Management. "You cannot fight the tape when the selling is for another reason than fundamentals."

However, she said the excessive selling could result in a rebound. "At some point in the next couple of weeks we could see a violent ?melt-up' because the market is oversold."

The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index <.gsptse> closed down 172.63 points, or 1.42 percent, at 11,947.29. The index earlier fell to 11,916.64, its lowest point since November 19.

Nine of the 10 main sectors on the index were in the red.

"We're certainly in some form of correction," said Michael Sprung, president of Sprung Investment Management. "The market was ahead of itself, and we're taking a definite setback."

The materials sector had the biggest decline, giving back 3.8 percent due to a more than 7 percent decline in base-metals miners and a 4.3 percent fall in gold miners.

Miner First Quantum Minerals Ltd shed 9.4 percent to C$15.43, virtually erasing the gains it made the previous day.

The price of bullion, which recorded its biggest fall ever on Monday, was up 0.5 percent but did not stem the slide in gold miners.

Barrick Gold Corp shed 5.6 percent to C$18.17 and played the biggest role of any single stock in leading the index lower.

Financials, the index's most heavily weighted sector, lost 0.8 percent.

Chinese ship runs into protected reef in Philippines ? while transporting 11 tons of illegal anteater meat

Handout / Reuters

Members of the Philippine Coast Guard inspect the Chinese fishing vessel that ran aground on Monday in the Tubbataha Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage site, in Palawan Province, west of Manila April 9, 2013 in this picture provided by Philippine Coast Guard.

By Teresa Cerojano, Associated Press

A Chinese vessel that ran into a protected coral reef in the southwestern Philippines held evidence of even more environmental destruction inside: more than 22,000 pounds of meat from a protected species, the pangolin or scaly anteater.

The steel-hulled vessel hit an atoll on April 8 at the Tubbataha National Marine Park, a UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site on Palawan island. Coast guard spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Armand Balilo said Monday that 400 boxes, each containing 25 to 30 kilograms of frozen pangolins, were discovered during a second inspection of the boat Saturday.

The World Wide Fund for Nature Philippines said the Chinese vessel F/N Min Long Yu could have been carrying up to 2,000 of the toothless, insect-eating animals rolled up in the boxes, with their scales already removed.

"It is bad enough that the Chinese have illegally entered our seas, navigated without boat papers and crashed recklessly into a national marine park and World Heritage Site," said WWF-Philippines chief executive officer Jose Ma. Lorenzo Tan. "It is simply deplorable that they appear to be posing as fishermen to trade in illegal wildlife."

The boat's 12 Chinese crewmen are being detained on charges of poaching and attempted bribery, said Adelina Villena, the marine park's lawyer. She said more charges are being prepared against them, including damaging the corals and violating the country's wildlife law for being found in possession of the pangolin meat.

It is not yet clear which of the four Asian pangolin species the meat comes from. The International Union of Conservation of Nature lists two species as endangered: the Sunda, or Malayan, pangolin, and the Chinese pangolin. Two others, including the Philippine pangolin endemic to Palawan, are classified as near threatened.

The animals are protected in many Asian nations, and an international ban on their trade has been in effect since 2002, but illicit trade continues. The meat and scales of the pangolin fetch hundreds of dollars per kilogram in China, where many believe they cure various ailments.

The IUCN says rising demand for pangolins and lax laws are wiping out the toothless anteaters from their forest habitat in Southeast Asia.

A pangolin crawls atop bags wrapping other pangolins during a news conference on wildlife rescue in Bangkok, Thailand, in May of 2012.

Alex Marcaida, an officer of the government's Palawan Council for Sustainable Development, Philippine authorities consider the Philippine pangolin threatened because of unabated illicit trade. He said the Chinese crewmen have said the pangolins came from Indonesia, but officials were still verifying the claim.

WWF-Philippines said the global illegal wildlife trade is estimated to yield at least $19 billion per year, comprising the fourth-largest illegal global trade after narcotics, product and currency counterfeiting and human trafficking. It said the risks are low compared with other crimes, and that high-level traders are rarely arrested, prosecuted or convicted.

The Philippine military quoted the fishermen as saying they accidentally wandered into Philippine waters from Malaysia. They were being detained in southwestern Puerto Princesa city, where Chinese consular officials visited them.

Tubbataha is a 239,700-acre marine sanctuary and popular diving destination 400 miles southwest of Manila. The massive reef already had been damaged by a U.S. Navy ship that got stuck in January and had to be dismantled.

The fishermen face up to 12 years' imprisonment and fines of up to $300,000 for the poaching charge alone. For possession of the pangolin meat, they can be imprisoned up to six years and fined, Villena said.
