Home prices likely to keep falling in 2012

By Martin Wolk

The housing market ended the year on a positive note with strong sales in December, but a glut of unsold homes will likely push prices lower through much of this year, forecasters said Friday.

Sales of existing homes hit an 11-month high last month and the number of properties on the market fell to the lowest level in nearly seven years, according to the National Association of Realtors.

Unseasonably warm weather may have helped boost sales, but analysts said a strengthening job market and record low mortgage rates should buoy housing in coming months. Still, they were troubled by the high level of "distressed homes" for sale, including short sales of underwater properties or sales of foreclosed properties. Nearly one-third of existing-home sales were distressed last month, according to the Realtors.

In addition, one-third of Realtors said home sales fell through last month because of declined mortgage applications or appraisals that fell short of the required values.

"These strong negative undercurrents in the housing market and absence of support from strong labor market conditions will continue to trim home sales in the near term," said Asha Bangalore, economist at Northern Trust Co.

The median sale price for an existing home in December was $162,500, down 2.5 percent from December 2010. For the full year, the median price for existing homes fell nearly 4 percent.

"Home sales will gradually improve in 2012. ... However, prices will continue to decline in the near term, despite the better sales," said Stuart Hoffman, chief economist of PNC. He pointed out that many home foreclosures are stuck in the pipeline due to paperwork issues and will pressure home prices in the year to come.

"The market for single-family homes picked up in the second half of 2011, after being stuck near the bottom for nearly three years," said economist Patrick Newport of IHS Global Insight. "This pickup is real, but the road to recovery will be a slow one."

While the home sales pace was a touch below economists' expectations, December marked the third straight month of gains, adding to hopes that a tentative recovery was taking shape.

But a glut of unsold properties that is weighing down on prices and stringent lending practices by banks is likely to make progress painfully slow.

There were 2.38 million unsold homes on the market last month, the fewest since March 2005. That represented a 6.2 months' supply at December's sales pace, the lowest since April 2006 and down from a 7.2 months' supply in November.

The Realtors group noted, however, that the inventory of unsold homes tends to decline in winter.

Data earlier this week showed single-family home starts rose for a third straight month in December and optimism among builders this month was the highest in four-and-a-half years.

"It is very encouraging that the current phase of the recovery is being driven by economic fundamentals as opposed to being fostered by temporary stimulus," said Millan Mulraine, a senior macro strategist at TD Securities in New York.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Man gets life sentence in 2011 violence spree (AP)

NEW YORK ? A 24-year-old man who pleaded guilty to murder and other crimes in a violent stabbing rampage in New York City last winter was sentenced Wednesday to 200 years in prison during a hearing in which he hurled epithets at one of his victims and was told by the judge that he was a "sociopath."

Maksim Gelman, born in Ukraine, pleaded guilty in November in Brooklyn to murder and other charges in the spree in February 2011, which included stabbing his stepfather and two others to death, fatally running down a pedestrian, stealing a car and attacking a subway passenger.

On Wednesday, he was sentenced to the maximum sentence for each of 13 counts; some of the sentences will run consecutively, resulting in the 200-year term.

"You are a violent predator and sociopath," Judge Vincent Del Giudice said.

Gelman's deadly spree on Feb. 11 started with a family argument over whether he could use his mother's car.

He stabbed his stepfather to death in their Brooklyn home, then took off in the car and drove to the home of an acquaintance, Yelena Bulchenko. Bulchenko's friends have said he was obsessed with the 20-year-old woman and imagined a romantic relationship with her.

She wasn't home, but Gelman stabbed her 56-year-old mother to death, then waited nearly nine hours with the body for the daughter to return. When she walked in, he stabbed her 11 times, killing her, authorities said.

On Wednesday, Gelman interrupted Bulchenko's boyfriend, Gerard Honig, telling him he had fallen in love "with a heroin addict," to which Honig responded, "You can burn in hell."

Gelman was then removed from the courtroom for a short time.

After stabbing Bulchenko, Gelman left the home, rear-ended a car and wildly stabbed at the driver, authorities said. The driver survived.

Stealing the wounded man's car, Gelman drove off and plowed into 62-year-old Stephen Tanenbaum, who died from his injuries. After abandoning the car, he later hailed a livery cab and attacked its driver, then approached another car, attacked a man inside and seized the car, police said. Both men survived.

All those attacks happened in Brooklyn. As authorities hunted him, Gelman was next spotted hours later on a subway train in Manhattan, where passengers recognized him from newspaper photographs and notified police.

He dashed across the tracks, switched trains and attacked a final passenger before he was grabbed by police who were in the subway car looking for him on the tracks.

The livery driver, Fitz Fullerton, spoke at the Wednesday hearing in a whisper because his voice box was damaged by Gelman.

"I just got caught up in this, this is my like third time ever seeing him and I hope he gets what he deserves," Fullerton said.

Gelman also made a brief statement, saying "I'm not the bad guy here," and that it wasn't his fault. He also said he was being followed by federal agents in an undercover investigation.

Gelman had previously said he wasn't guilty, was under medical supervision and his attorney, Edward Friedman, described his client's mental state as fragile.

But given the evidence and a psychiatrist's recent opinion that Gelman couldn't argue he was not guilty by reason of insanity, he decided he wanted to get out of his holding cell and start serving his time in a permanent facility, his lawyer said. No plea deal was offered.

On Tuesday, Gelman admitted trying to kill passenger Joseph Lozito on a train on Feb. 12 at the end of his two-day spree.

Police later recovered a bloody knife, three straight razor blades, a paring knife and $932.

When asked by police why the four victims had to die, Gelman said, "Because I said so," according to the documents.

Large and in charge: Powerful people overestimate their own height

ScienceDaily (Jan. 16, 2012) ? The psychological experience of power makes people feel taller than they are, according to research by ILR School associate professor of organizational behavior Jack Goncalo and a Washington University colleague.

"Although a great deal of research has shown that physically imposing individuals are more likely to acquire power, this work is the first to show that the powerful may actually feel taller than they are," Goncalo and Michelle Duguid write in an upcoming issue of Psychological Science.

So a 5-foot-4-inch woman might actually sprout an inch or two in her own mind when she's having an empowered moment. In other words, there is actually a physical experience that goes along with feeling powerful.

Three experiments with 266 American men and women confirmed for Goncalo and Duguid that there is a relationship between feelings of power and one's self-perception of height.

"Using different manipulations of power and measures of perceived height, we found that people literally perceived themselves as taller when they occupied a more powerful position," they write.

Is that perhaps why, Goncalo and Duguid wonder, BP Chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg referred to Gulf of Mexico oil spill victims as "small people?"

Research -- included assigning one's height to a video game avatar --established a starting point for exploring reciprocity between the psychological and physical experiences of power, Goncalo said.

He added that the research begs a number of questions: Do short people attempt to capture power by physically elevating themselves above others? Would it be possible to psychologically empower people by giving them an office on the top floor? Can feeling powerful make leaders less able to feel empathy and relate to the "little people" because they literally feel bigger? Is it possible that BP's CEO gave us an insider's view on the experience of power?

Maybe the powerful really do feel bigger than the rest of us.

Wisconsin city's mayor survives first round of recall (Reuters)

SHEBOYGAN, Wis (Reuters) ? The first-term mayor of a Wisconsin town, a self-described alcoholic who has come under pressure to step down, survived the first round of a recall election on Tuesday by getting more votes than any other candidate.

Sheboygan Mayor Bob Ryan, 48, took about 33 percent of the vote in the eight-way contest, the city's first mayoral recall election, and former state representative Terry Van Akkeren finished second with 26 percent, the city clerk's office said.

"I feel great. We took first place," Ryan said in an interview from his post-election party.

The Sheboygan election came on the same day as opponents of another Wisconsin politician -- Republican Governor Scott Walker -- filed petitions containing more than a million signatures to try to force the governor into a special election only a year after he took office.

Since no candidate received a majority of the votes cast in the Sheboygan election, where the contenders also included a high school student, the top two vote-getters move on to a run-off on February 21.

That vote will be essentially a rematch of the last election, in which Ryan defeated Van Akkeren to win the office in 2009.

More than 4,000 Sheboygan voters had signed petitions to force the recall after Ryan was caught on tape making sordid jokes about a sister-in-law and was photographed passed out in a tavern during a drinking binge last summer.

Ryan, a married father of three, admits he was a binge drinker and considers himself an alcoholic but said he has not had a drink for months.

"But I know the only way to put the character issue to rest is over time. I hope that by the election it will be behind me."

LOOKING FORWARD TO REMATCH

Ryan said he was looking forward to the rematch with Van Akkeren and hoped the result of Tuesday's vote would let the campaign focus on issues such as drawing business to Sheboygan, which rests on the western shore of Lake Michigan about midway between Milwaukee and Green Bay.

He said in a pre-election interview that the scandal had forced him to come to grips with his drinking. "Everyone knew me as a fun guy. But lately it had changed. I was not a happy drunk. I became cynical."

Interest in the election was so strong that the Sheboygan city clerk's computer servers were overwhelmed. More than 9,800 votes were cast for a turnout of about 34.5 percent.

Ryan was a city councilman before winning election to his first term as mayor in 2009. He defeated Wisconsin's first Latino mayor, Juan Perez, in a primary, and Van Akkeren in the general election.

Van Akkeren, 57, who served as a Sheboygan alderman from 1986 to 2003 and as a state representative from 2003 to 2010, saw the results differently.

"The mayor got 33 percent of the vote," Van Akkeren said in a telephone interview. "That means 67 percent of the people aren't happy with him."

As for the high school student? Asher Heimermann, 18, a senior at South High School, finished last with a handful of votes, but ahead of write-ins.

The recall election was a first for Sheboygan, but not the first time residents have attempted to recall a city leader. Opponents tried to recall Perez six years ago, but failed to gather enough support among voters to force an election.

Georgia Tech findings advance glaucoma research

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness. Nearly 4 million Americans have the disorder, which affects 70 million worldwide. There is no cure and no early symptoms. Once vision is lost, it's permanent.

New findings at Georgia Tech, published in January during Glaucoma Awareness Month, explore one of the many molecular origins of glaucoma and advance research dedicated to fighting the disease.

Glaucoma is typically triggered when fluid is unable to circulate freely through the eye's trabecular meshwork (TM) tissue. Intraocular pressure rises and damages the retina and optic nerve, which causes vision loss. In certain cases of glaucoma, this blockage results from a build-up of the protein myocilin. Georgia Tech Chemistry and Biochemistry Assistant Professor Raquel Lieberman focused on examining the structural properties of these myocilin deposits.

"We were surprised to discover that both genetically defected as well as normal, or wild-type (WT), myocilin are readily triggered to produce very stable fibrous residue containing a pathogenic material called amyloid," said Lieberman, whose work was published in the most recent Journal of Molecular Biology.

Amyloid formation, in which a protein is converted from its normal form into fibers, is recognized as a major contributor to numerous non-ocular disorders, including Alzheimer's, certain forms of diabetes and Mad Cow disease (in cattle). Scientists are currently studying ways to destroy amyloid fibrils as an option for treating these diseases. Further research, based on Lieberman's findings, could potentially result in drugs that prevent or stop myocilin amyloid formation or destroy existing fibrils in glaucoma patients.

Until this point, amyloids linked to glaucoma had been restricted to the retinal area. In those cases, amyloids kill retina cells, leading to vision loss, but don't affect intraocular pressure.

"The amyloid-containing myocilin deposits we discovered kill cells that maintain the integrity of TM tissue," said Lieberman. "In addition to debris from dead cells, the fibrils themselves may also form an obstruction in the TM tissue. Together, these mechanisms may hasten the increase of intraocular pressure that impairs vision."

Together with her research team, Lieberman produced WT and genetically defected myocilin variants that had been documented in patients who develop glaucoma in childhood or early adulthood. The experiments were conducted in collaboration with Georgia Tech Biology Professor Ingeborg Schmidt-Krey and Stanford Genetics Professor Douglas Vollrath. Three Georgia Tech students also participated in the research: Susan Orwig (Ph.D. graduate, Chemistry and Biochemistry), Chris Perry (current undergraduate, Biochemistry) and Laura Kim (master's graduate, Biology).

Golden Globe nominees warm up with rooftop party (AP)

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. ? The glittery, Champagne-soaked vibe of the Golden Globes spreads through Hollywood days before the ceremony, and the Dom Perignon was definitely flowing at W magazine's pre-Globes party.

On a patio overlooking the Sunset Strip at the storied Chateau Marmont, Golden Globe nominees Charlize Theron and Tilda Swinton and stars Emma Stone, Jessica Biel and Patrick Stewart mixed it up Friday night with fellow actors, filmmakers and fashionistas. The soiree honored W magazine's February movie issue.

Swinton, nominated for best actress in a drama for "We Need to Talk About Kevin," lit up the party in a white pantsuit, short platinum hair and bright smile. Theron, who's up for best actress in a comedy or musical for "Young Adult," looked every inch the star in a slinky black dress, her hair in old-Hollywood waves. She talked beauty and fashion with Biel, who dazzled in a white beaded gown.

Orlando Bloom and his wife, model Miranda Kerr, charmed partygoers together, while model Agyness Deyn posed for iPhone photos with a friend.

Also enjoying the view from the patio: Actress Rose McGowan, "Modern Family" star Eric Stonestreet, director Sofia Coppola and Rodarte design duo Kate and Laura Mulleavy.

The pre-Globe festivities continue Saturday with various gift suites and galas.

The 69th annual Golden Globes will be presented Sunday at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and broadcast live on NBC.

The nation's weather (AP)

Weather Underground Forecast for Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012.

Wintry weather persisted over the Great Lakes and Northeast on Saturday as a strong winter storm slowly pulled northeastward and away from the region. Flow around this system was expected to continue pulling moisture onshore from the Atlantic Ocean, while cold air continued pouring into the Great Lakes. Snow showers were expected to do diminish across the Northeast early in the day, though lake effect snow showers were expected to persist along the downwind shores of the Great Lakes. Parts of western New York, northwestern Pennsylvania, and northern Ohio could see another 3 to 6 inches of new snow. Elsewhere, expect only 1 to 2 inches of light snow to develop across the higher elevations of the Northern Appalachians.

Behind the system, high pressure was expected to quickly build in from the Central Plains and Mississippi River Valley. This rapid change from low to high pressure was expected to cause some windy conditions across the Great Lakes, Midwest, and Ohio River Valley. Wind gusts were expected from 20 to 30 mph, which would be even stronger at higher elevations of the Northern and Central Appalachians.

In the north, a weak trough of low pressure moving through Canada was expected to continue pushing a front through the northern U.S. This system had little moisture associated with it, but it was expected to bring a few scattered snow showers to the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest.

Out west, a strong and cold winter storm will drop in from the Gulf of Alaska. This system was expected to move over British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest, triggering heavy rain and snow showers. Most areas of the Cascades were expected to see 3 to 8 inches of new snow on Saturday. Cold temperatures were expected to accompany this system, with highs ranging 10 to 15 degrees below seasonable. Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Friday ranged from a morning low of -14 degrees at Hallock, Minn. to a high of 80 degrees at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

New Mississippi governor supports amendment on limiting clemency (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Mississippi's new Republican governor backs tightening the rules on pardons after his predecessor, one-time presidential hopeful Haley Barbour, sparked controversy by granting clemency to more than 200 convicts in his final days in office, his spokesman said on Thursday.

Governor Phil Bryant, who served as Barbour's lieutenant governor and who took office on Tuesday, would support a state constitutional amendment to tweak the governor's clemency powers, spokesman Mick Bullock said in a statement.

"Governor Phil Bryant has asked Senator Michael Watson, Chairman for the Senate Constitution Committee, to review the current law as it regards to pardons, how it allows the governor to make these type of decisions, and whether we need to address the wording better in a constitutional amendment," Bullock said.

"The governor believes a constitutional amendment is the right way to address such an important issue," Bullock said, without elaborating further.

Barbour has been under fire since it became public early this week that he had ordered the release of four convicted murderers and an armed robber who had worked at the governor's mansion. Then on Tuesday, his last day in office, he granted clemency or suspended sentences to more than 200 other convicts.

A day later, a Mississippi judge barred the state from releasing any of the newly pardoned prisoners who remained in jail, but not before the five had already been set free.

The judge acted hours after Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood sought the injunction to prevent the early release of clemency recipients.

The judge's order blocked the release of 21 inmates still serving time when the clemency was announced and who remained incarcerated. It also ordered the five who had been freed to appear for a hearing later in January.

MOST OUT OF JAIL WHEN CLEMENCY ANNOUNCED

Barbour's office has said only a minority of those convicts who received clemency were incarcerated at the time of the move, with 90 percent of them no longer in prison when the pardons were granted.

Barbour had said that the pardons were intended to allow the inmates "to find gainful employment or acquire professional licenses as well as hunt and vote," and that his decisions were typically based on the recommendation of the Parole Board.

But the pardons generated a firestorm of controversy about how much power a governor should have to pardon criminals convicted of serious crimes.

"No governor should have unfettered discretion and authority to grant pardons," said former assistant U.S. Attorney General Jimmy Gurule, now a law professor at Notre Dame.

"If it is determined that the pardons were granted illegally, in violation of the state constitution, then they are void, the sentences should be reinstated, and the convicts rearrested."

Barbour pardoned more people on his last day of office than his four most recent predecessors combined, according to statistics provided by the Mississippi Secretary of State's office.

One of those pardoned was the brother of former National Football League quarterback Brett Favre. Earnest Scott Favre was convicted in 1996 of driving while intoxicated after a vehicle he was driving crashed and killed his best friend.

Also included were four men convicted of murder and another convicted of armed robbery, all serving life sentences, who worked at the governor's mansion cleaning vehicles, waiting tables and performing other domestic duties.

Gonzaga easily over Oliveira, Stout falls short versus Tavares at UFC 142

Back in 2010, Gabriel Gonzaga lost his confidence and his passion. He got both back tonight in Rio de Janeiro.

The former heavyweight title contender schooled hotshot prospect Edinaldo Oliveira in less than four minutes. Gonzaga made it look easy as he took the 6-foot-7 Oliveira to the ground and eventually locked on a nasty rear-naked choke to force the tap at 3:22 of the first round.

"It felt great to be back in the Octagon. My time away from the UFC was good for me. I dealt with some personal business in my life and came back refocused. Before, I was training well, but my mind just wasn't in it. Now, I'm back, I feel great. I'm focused and I showed that," said Gonzaga.

[Don't miss the action: Watch UFC 142 live on Y! Sports]

Gonzaga (13-6, 8-5 UFC) last fought with the promotion in Oct. of 2010, then abruptly retired. He had a comeback fight with a smaller promotion in October of 2011.

After starting off 4-0 with the promotion, he rose near the top of the division, but then lost badly to UFC heavyweight champ Randy Couture at UFC 74. After that fight, Gonzaga looked tentative and wilted in big moments going just 3-4.

Oliveira (13-2, 0-1 UFC) was way in over his head tonight. He looked to small for the weight class and his takedown defense was shaky. Once Gonzaga got him to the ground, Oliveira was easy prey.

Stout tentative in first fight since trainer's passing

This was going to be a tough night for Sam Stout. He was facing Brazilian Thiago Tavares on his home turf and doing so without his trainer Shawn Tompkins, who passed away last August.

Having to defend takedowns early, Stout got taken out of his game and lost via unanimous decision.

Stout (17-7-1, 6-6 UFC) was taken down twice in the first round. Tavares did little damage and really never settled Stout on his back, but the mental toll it took on the Canadian changed the fight.

Stout, a very dangerous striker, never committed the rest of the way to letting his hands go. At times, he was actually outstruck by the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt.

"Sam Stout was the toughest opponent I've ever faced and this is the biggest win of my career. I thought about this fight for a long time. I have to be honest: of all the ways I saw this fight going, I never expected to beat him striking," Tavares said. "I tried to take the fight to the ground, but he has great takedown defense. The fight stayed on the feet and I was able to win there. I want another big name next."

This was Stout's first fight without Tompkins in his camp and cageside. Tompkins was more than just a trainer, he was Stout's brother-in-law. Stout's sister Emilie was married to the trainer.

"This was my first fight without Shawn (Tompkins). It was definitely an adjustment not having him in my corner. I hope Shawn would be proud," Stout said. "I thought I took rounds two and three, but I just struggled to find my rhythm. My head wasn't in it in the first round. I had a slow start and I have no one to blame but myself for that."

The lackluster performance wasn't surprising, but it was uncharacteristic. Stout is only .500 fighter with the promotion, but he's earned four postfight award bonuses.

Iran OPEC government warns Arab oil producers (Reuters)

TEHRAN (Reuters) ? Iran's Gulf Arab neighbors should not raise their production to replace Iranian oil if the European Union goes ahead with a ban on Iranian crude imports, Iran's OPEC governor said on Sunday.

The EU has agreed in principle to ban imports of Iranian oil, while the United States has pressured Asian buyers to reduce imports to starve Tehran of revenue for its disputed nuclear program.

Asian leaders from some of Iran's biggest oil sales markets are already touring the Middle East to secure supplies, as tension over Iran's nuclear plans builds, while European buyers may rely more heavily on Arab oil producers should an EU ban come into effect.

Iran OPEC Governor Mohammad Ali Khatibi said Tehran would see any move to fill in for Iranian crude as Gulf Arab oil producers siding with Iran's western opponents.

"If the oil producing Gulf states give the green light to replacing Iran's oil these countries would be the main culprits for whatever happens in the region -- including the Strait of Hormuz," Khatibi told the Sharq daily newspaper.

"Our Arab neighbor countries should not cooperate with these adventurers... These measures will not be perceived as friendly."

EU countries have proposed "grace periods" on existing contracts of one to 12 months to allow companies to find alternative suppliers before implementing an embargo.

Khatibi, a key part of Iran's OPEC negotiating team, said there was a good chance that the EU would not go through with its threat to ban Iranian crude imports if Gulf Arab producers refused to back it.

Saudi Arabian Oil Minister Ali al-Naimi said on Saturday the world's biggest oil exporter was ready and able to meet any increase in demand, without making any reference to sanctions on OPEC rival Iran, while Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visited the kingdom to boost cooperation with China's biggest oil supplier.

China is also Iran's biggest oil buyer, importing over half a million barrels of Iranian crude a day to fuel its economic growth, making Beijing wary of upsetting Tehran and an opponent of sanctions against it.

Iran, OPEC's second-largest oil producer after Saudi Arabia with output of about 3.5 million barrels per day, has threatened to block the vital oil export route of the Strait of Hormuz if further sanctions prevent it from selling oil.

About a third of all sea-borne oil was shipped through the Strait of Hormuz in 2009, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), and U.S. warships patrol the area to ensure safe passage.

The United States has said it would not tolerate any attempt to disrupt shipping in the strait, but Iran's navy commander Habibollah Sayyari said Tehran could control the vital export route.

"Iran has always exercised domination over the Strait of Hormuz," Sayyari was quoted by the official IRNA news agency as saying.

The United States and its allies suspects Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons but the Islamic Republic says it is only interested in nuclear technology for generating electricity.

    Anatomy of a science fair project

    This might sound like a flawed project, but the student defined ?smarter? as ?higher scores on math and memory tests? and demonstrated that tactile learners scored better while chewing gum.

    See first:

    Part I:? 3 Strategies for an Original Science Fair Project
    Part II:? How to Answer the 5 Most Common Questions from a Science Fair Judge

    ~~~
    Designing your own science fair project should be exciting and fun, but without a little guidance it is often stressful for parents and students.? This post is to help both of you get started designing an original, creative, and technically correct science fair project.? First, keep in mind the 5 basic steps of the scientific method (see Part I:? 3 Strategies for an Original Science Fair Project).
    QUESTION => HYPOTHESIS => EXPERIMENT => RESULTS => CONCLUSION
    Sounds straightforward, but finding a good question is usually the biggest hurdle, so let?s take a look at the type of question you should be looking for.? The structure of your question needs to be something like?
    • What is the effect of one thing on another thing?
    • What happens to something when I change something else?
    • If I increase this thing, what will happen to that thing?
    The scientific term for those ?things? is variables.
    One variable will be changed by the student.? That variable is called the independent (or manipulated) variable.? In the questions above, the independent variables are ?one thing?, ?something else?, and ?this thing? because these are the variables that will be manipulated.
    Another variable in the experiment will be monitored to see if anything has happened to it in response to the changes in the first variable (i.e. the independent one).? The variable that the student thinks might change is called the dependent (or response) variable.? In the questions above, the dependent variables are ?another thing?, ?something?, and ?that thing?.? And the prediction for how it might change is called the hypothesis.
    For example:? How does the length of the straw affect the distance traveled by a spitball?
    Here, the independent variable is the length of the straw and the dependent variable is the distance traveled by the spitball.
    Everything else, such as type of straw, diameter of straw, type of paper used for spitball, amount of paper used for spitball, angle of straw, etc., is not part of this specific question, so the student will not focus on them (i.e. the student will keep these things the same when conducting their experiment).? Sometimes we call these controlled variables, but that often confuses students because they are not the actual ?control?.? Other times we call them constant variables, but that is an oxymoron (how can something be both constant and variable?).? Use whatever terminology the teacher asks for, but note that as long as they are not changed, they will not affect the results.
    Getting from question to hypothesis is the next step.? The choices for hypotheses, and it is really important that the student picks one BEFORE conducting the experiment, are:
    • As the length of the straw increases, the distance the spitball travels increases because ?
    • As the length of the straw increases, the distance the spitball travels decreases because ?
    • As the length of the straw increases, the distance the spitball travels does not change because ?
    All teachers and science fair judges like to see the reasoning behind why the hypothesis was chosen. The reasoning shows the student did research or has some understanding of, or interest in, the question.
    Getting from question to experiment is now easier.? The student will CHANGE the independent variable, and MEASURE the dependent variable.? Repeat at least 3 times.? Experiment done!? Now graph your results, make a conclusion, and get ready for judging (see Part II:? How to Answer the 5 Most Common Questions from a Science Fair Judge).
    FYI:? If you are interesting in the spitball experiment, you will need to find a way to standardize the ?blowing? of the spitball.? In other words, how will you make sure that the puff of air is the same each time?? (Hint:? what could you use ? besides your own lungs ? to provide the puff of air?).
    Also, make it your own project by asking a slightly different question.? Perhaps something like:? How does the type of paper affect the stickiness of the spitball?? Here you will need to figure out a way to quantify (i.e. generate a number) for ?stickiness? (Hint:? sticky objects will stick longer than not-so-sticky objects, and time is an example of a quantitative, dependent variable).
    Good Luck!? There is more science fair project help at my website, http://science-fair-coach.com
    Rangers "optimistic" over Darvish deal (Reuters)
    (Reuters) ? Texas Rangers president Nolan Ryan has expressed confidence of striking a deal with flame-throwing Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish before next week's deadline.
    "My expectation are that we'll get something done," Ryan told ESPN after meeting the 25-year-old, accepting that talks could go right down to wire.
    The Rangers won rights to negotiate with Darvish with a record bid of $51.7 million under the Japanese posting system and their 30-day window ends on Wednesday.
    "That's the nature of things," shrugged Ryan, who added Texas were "optimistic" about signing Japan's hottest baseball property.
    The 6ft-5in Darvish last week visited Texas for the first time with his representatives and family members.
    "He was bigger than I thought," Ryan said. "He looks good. He's built like a pitcher. I like his attitude about wanting to compete."
    The Rangers only pay the $51.7 million posting fee if Darvish joins the two-time defending American League champions.
    Daisuke Matsuzaka and Ichiro Suzuki went to the major leagues under the system.
    Darvish, whose father is Iranian and mother Japanese, went 18-6 with a 1.44 ERA for the Nippon Ham Fighters and also led Japan's Pacific League with 276 strikeouts last season.
    Darvish pitched at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where Japan lost to eventual champions South Korea in the semi-finals, and helped his country win the World Baseball Classic title in 2009.
    A snake named Matilda: New species in Tanzania (AP)
    NAIROBI, Kenya ? The world's newest snake has menacing-looking yellow and black scales, dull green eyes and two spiky horns. And it's named after a 7-year-old girl.
    Matilda's Horned Viper was discovered in a small patch of southwest Tanzania about two years ago and was introduced last month as the world's newest known snake species in an issue of Zootaxa.
    Tim Davenport, the director of the Wildlife Conservation Society in Tanzania, was on the three-person team that discovered the viper. Thanks to his daughter, the snake will always carry a family namesake.
    "My daughter, who was 5 at the time, became fascinated by it and used to love spending time watching it and helping us look after it," Davenport told The Associated Press on Wednesday. "We called it Matilda's Viper at that stage ... and then the name stuck."
    Only three new vipers have been discovered across Africa the last three decades, making the find rare and important. The Wildlife Conservation Society is not revealing exactly where the snake lives so that trophy hunters can't hunt it.
    Davenport said he is not sure how many live in the wild because snake counts are hard to do. Twelve live in captivity and a breeding plan is being carried out.
    Davenport, a Briton who has lived in Tanzania for 12 years, said that while many people fear snakes, most are harmless and help keep rodent numbers down. Matilda's horned viper can grow to 2 feet (65 centimeters) or bigger, he said.
    "This particular animal looks fierce and probably is venomous (though bush viper bites are not fatal)," Davenport told AP via an Internet chat. "However, it is actually very calm animal and not at all aggressive. I have handled one on a number of occasions."
    The Wildlife Conservation Society runs the Bronx Zoo and the Central Park Zoo in New York, and Davenport said it would be a "great option" to showcase the new horned viper at one of those locations, but that nothing has yet been decided.
    A look at economic developments around the globe (AP)
    A look at economic developments and activity in major stock markets around the world Wednesday:
    ___
    BERLIN ? Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti threw his support behind a new tax on financial transactions, backing a push by Germany and France, but said he would prefer to have it apply across the whole European Union.
    ___
    BERLIN ? Germany's economy slipped into reverse in the last quarter of 2011 despite posting strong growth of 3 percent for the full year, the country's Federal Statistics Office said.
    ___
    LONDON ? The rally in stock markets stalled, as hopes of a recovery in the U.S. economy were offset by concerns that Germany was heading back into recession.
    The FTSE 100 index of leading British shares closed down 0.5 percent while Germany's DAX fell 0.2 percent. The CAC-40 in France ended 0.2 percent lower.
    ___
    TOKYO ? In Asia, financial markets closed mostly higher on expectations that China will tweak its monetary policy to encourage growth, but in a limited way to keep its already sizzling property market under control.
    Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 0.3 percent and Hong Kong's Hang Seng index gained 0.8 percent.
    However, mainland Chinese shares edged lower as traders booked profits following two days of sharp gains. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index lost 0.4 percent while the Shenzhen Composite Index was marginally lower.
    ___
    BEIJING ? U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and Chinese leaders pledged to build economic ties but Beijing gave no sign it would relent in its opposition to American sanctions on Iran's oil industry.
    ___
    MADRID ? Spain's Parliament approved the new conservative government's first austerity measures, which aim to rein in the country's swollen deficit with $11.5 billion in spending cuts.
    ___
    BRUSSELS ? The European Union stepped up pressure on Hungary, saying its fiscal policies were unsustainable and threatening legal action over a new constitution that some fear could push the country back into authoritarianism.
    ___
    PARIS ? French government ministers led the country's semiannual consumer pilgrimage known as "The Sales," hoping to jump-start a stagnant economy.
    ___
    LAGONISSI, Greece ? Debt-crippled Greece's budget deficit is expected to hit 9.6 percent of economic output in 2011, about half a percentage point above target, the development minister acknowledged.
    Health Tip: When Your Child Cries at Night (HealthDay)
    (HealthDay News) -- Though it's tempting for parents to run to their child at the slightest cry during the night, experts say that's not always the best reaction.
    The American Academy of Pediatrics offers these suggestions for when your child cries at bedtime:
    • Wait a few minutes before responding; if the crying continues, wait longer each time before you respond to the cries.
    • Offer reassurance that you're there, but don't play, linger or turn on a light if you do enter the room.
    • Each time you enter the room, stay a little farther from the bed; eventually, reassure your child without entering the room.
    • When your child calls for you, offer a gentle reminder that it's time to go to sleep.
    Lone wolf looks for love in California
    Allen Daniels / AP
    This Nov. 14, 2011 photo from a trail camera appears to show OR-7, the young male wolf that has wandered hundreds of miles across Oregon and Northern California looking for a mate and a new home. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife says the photo likely shows OR-7, because a collar is visible on the neck, and GPS tracking data put him in the area where the camera was set on that date. Oregon's famous wandering wolf seems to be staying out of trouble after settling for now in the southern Cascades, but there are no signs he has found a mate yet.
    AP reports: GRANTS PASS, Ore.?? A young male gray wolf that wandered hundreds of miles across Oregon and eventually crossed into California as he searched for a mate has apparently been photographed for the first time.
    The black-and-white photo shows a wolf sniffing the ground in a stand of dense forest. It is likely the animal known as OR-7, said Roblyn Schneider Brown, an Oregon state biologist.
    A lone wolf, one of just 29 in Oregon who heard the call of the wild and left his pack for a solo trip south, is now the first wild gray wolf known to be at large in California since 1924. NBC's Kristen Dahlgren reports.
