At least 60 killed, up to 131 injured, after train derails in Spain

By Miguel Vidal

SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA, Spain (Reuters) - A train derailed outside the ancient northwestern Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela on Wednesday, killing at least 60 people and injuring up to 131 in one of Europe's worst rail disasters.

Bodies covered in blankets lay next to the overturned carriages as smoke billowed from the wreckage. Firefighters clambered over the twisted metal trying to get survivors out of the windows, while ambulances and fire engines surrounded the scene.

The government said it was working on the hypothesis the derailment was an accident - although the scene will stir memories of 2004's Madrid train bombing, carried out by Islamist extremists, that killed 191 people. Sabotage or attack was unlikely to be involved, an official source said.

The train operated by state rail company Renfe with 247 people on board derailed on the eve of the city's main festival in honor of Saint James when thousands of Christian pilgrims from all over the world pack the streets.

"It was going so quickly. ... It seems that on a curve the train started to twist, and the wagons piled up one on top of the other," passenger Ricardo Montesco told Cadena Ser radio station.

"A lot of people were squashed on the bottom. We tried to squeeze out of the bottom of the wagons to get out and we realized the train was burning. ... I was in the second wagon and there was fire. ... I saw corpses," he added.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who was born in Santiago de Compostela, will visit the site on Thursday morning, his spokeswoman said.

"In the face of a tragedy such as just happened in Santiago de Compostela on the eve of its big day, I can only express my deepest sympathy as a Spaniard and a Galician," Rajoy said in a statement.

Santiago de Compostela's tourism board said all the festivities, including Wednesday's traditional High Mass at the centuries-old cathedral, were canceled as the city went into mourning.

'LIKELY AN ACCIDENT'

El Pais newspaper cited sources close to the investigation as saying the train was travelling at over twice the speed limit on a sharp curve. Both Renfe and state-owned Adif, which is in charge of the tracks, had opened an investigation into the cause of the derailment, Renfe said.

An official source said no statement would be made regarding the cause of the Spanish derailment until the black boxes of the train were examined, but said it was most likely an accident.

"We are moving away from the hypothesis of sabotage or attack," he said.

Clinics in the city were overwhelmed with people flocking to give blood, while hotels organized free rooms for relatives. Madrid sent forensic scientists and hospital staff to the region on special flights.

The death toll was 60 and could rise, with up to 131 injured, a Galicia-based spokeswoman for the office of the central government said.

"The scene is shocking, it's Dante-esque," said the head of the surrounding Galicia region, Alberto Nunez Feijoo, in a radio interview.

The eight-carriage train was travelling from Madrid to Ferrol on the Galician coast when it derailed, Renfe said in a statement.

The disaster happened as Spain is struggling to emerge from a long-running recession marked by government-driven austerity to bring its finances into order. Firefighters called off a strike to help with the disaster, while hospital staff, many operating on reduced salaries because of spending cuts, worked overtime to tend the injured.

The city's main festival focuses on St James, one of Jesus' 12 disciples whose remains are said to rest in the city and who is patron saint of Galicia.

The apostle's shrine there is the destination of the famous El Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, followed by Christians since the Middle Ages.

The derailment happened less than two weeks after six people died when a train came off the tracks and hit the platform at a station in central France.

That accident may have been caused by a loose steel plate at a junction, French train operator SNCF said.

Wednesday's derailment was one of the worst rail accidents in Europe over the past 25 years.

In November 2000, 155 people were killed when a fire in a tunnel engulfed a funicular train packed with skiers in Austria.

In Montenegro, up to 46 people were killed and nearly 200 injured in 2006 when a packed train derailed and plunged into a ravine outside the capital, Podgorica.

In Spain itself, 41 people were killed the same year when an underground train derailed and overturned in a tunnel just before entering the Jesus metro station in Valencia.

Local gymnasts heading to Israel

Posted at: 07/09/2013 5:46 PM
By: Chris Onorato

Once they're asked what they did on their summer vacation, two local gymnasts should have quite a story to tell. The 16 year olds will be among nine thousand athletes from 71 countries in Israel for the Maccabiah Games. Anna Weiskopf explains, "It's like the Jewish olympics. You get to compete with all of the Jews all around the world and you get to be with people similar to your heritage and it's just gonna be fun."

Anna Weiskopf and Meghan Webb both qualified for the games last year. Tomorrow, they head to Israel. But because of an injury, Meghan won't be able to compete. "It was disappointing, I thought I wouldn't be able to go, but when I got to go and after talking with all my friends, they really wanted me to go and it's still going to be really fun."

Competing or not, both say it's the experience they're going for. Anna says she's looking forward to meeting new people from all over the world. Meghan says she's looking forward to the Dead Sea and being able to float in it. A national coach will guide the team into competition, but Anna will have the benefit of having a familiar face too. Ami Sabari, who coaches the girls at World Class Gymnastics Academy in Latham, is from Israel and will make the trip with them.

The girls leave Wednesday. The opening ceremony is July 18.

THL's Monkey King phone packs a 13MP camera on both sides

THL is a name that makes us cringe whenever we come across it, not only because its logo is clearly "inspired" by HTC's older counterpart, but more so because it's been shamelessly cloning designs from the likes of HTC, LG and Samsung. Alas, these KIRF phones sell well in China, thus letting THL rapidly expand its retail business in recent years -- there are now a handful of THL stores in Shenzhen alone. But today, the company finally has something worth writing about: the Android 4.2.2-powered W11 aka "Monkey King" (a main character from the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West).

Download 2013: metal, mayhem? and good old British rain ...

Download is one of the UK?s biggest and most hallowed music festivals and has been running almost yearly since 2003. It attracts many bands: classic rock gods, new exciting hardcore and alternative outfits and of course the most metal of monsters. Thousands of fans from across the world come together every year to revel in a humongous weekend of music, mosh pits and on occasion, muddy wellies.

2013 was no exception: with masked nu-metallers Slipknot, heavy metal giants Iron Maiden and the wonderfully bizarre industrial metal group Rammstein at the headlining helm, tickets sold quickly and everybody readied their tents and band t-shirts in heavy anticipation of a great weekend. With a crowd of 90,000 and 152 bands performing, it really was a colossal festival, full of things to do and see.

The bands, as expected, put on amazing shows and were the biggest aspect of this reviewer?s weekend. However, every festival goer will know that the experience is made up of more than the music. This lifestyle review will focus on Download itself as a festival and all the highs and the few lows involved with the other aspects of festival life, such as food, facilities, shopping and atmosphere.

Camping

DOWNLOAD

Chilling out and playing cards in the tent to avoid the rain

Finding space and putting up the tents was fairly miserable because we were caught in a heavy downpour for about an hour, however after this everything went smoothly. Having a tent with a porch was very useful for muddy gear (it did rain occasionally over the weekend) and a four-man was nicely spacious, though a two-man would have done the job almost as well. It?s difficult to get all your friends in the same spot, so although a group of us were in White camp we also met up with people camping in Blue and Brown.

The colour system was fairly useful, the only issue was that occasionally the signs were not completely clear. However there was a good staff presence, for example an information booth in our camping area, so all queries could be answered. We didn?t have any trouble from those camping around us, except for some rowdy drunken sing-a-longs in the early hours that were more amusing than annoying, and everybody respected one another?s space. Also, camping right next to a food stand was a good idea, not just for hunger pangs, but also as a way to find our tents.

Food & Drink

Image3

Drinking ?1 tea at Tea and Toast

As to be expected from a festival, the food was pricey but included a good variety to suit most tastes. Fast food stands were the easiest to find and some, for example Gourmet Burger, were (relatively) cheap. I remember seeing at least five doughnut stands, all very tempting! Some catered solely to vegetarians and vegans and many others had suitable options. Some of the more unusual options included a very popular ostrich burger stand and Strumpets with Crumpets, which offered hot drinks and delicious cakes and was staffed by ladies in burlesque get-up. Tea and Toast had ?1 tea and the most divine eggy bread and toasties.

Water and other bottled drinks were ?2 on average, but could be found cheaper. Alcohol was costly; the main provider was Tubourg, but Iron Maiden?s new lager Trooper was also on offer for ?5 a bottle with a coaster and cup thrown in. I managed to avoid spending lots of money by bringing food. We had two very tasty barbeque lunches on Friday and Saturday that kept us going all day. Also, there was a good supermarket and smaller shops that provided bits and pieces.

Facilities

As Download put it on their website, ?there will be toilets, showers and water available to all, but that?s pretty much it.? There were a fair amount of portaloos, but once or twice queues meant a half hour wait. The best time for toilet cleanliness is during mid-morning, but late at night is definitely best for the lack of queues, although don?t leave it until the early hours, they?re usually disgusting by then. The water stands were useful for filling up bottles and brushing teeth. I didn?t actually spot any showering facilities but I survived nicely on baby wipes and dry shampoo without having to queue ages for a shower. Another useful facility was the phone charging booths. I used one that cost ?5 for one hour and ?8 for two hours which was expensive but there?s nothing so reassuring as a charged phone. Although I recommend bringing in a spare phone or battery. There were also lockers available for valuables that had charging options, though I just kept necessary valuables with me and had no trouble.

Shopping

Image2

Proudly sporting my new hat

First and foremost, official merchandise was in hot demand. I got a Download t-shirt for ?20 and, after deliberating over two t-shirt designs, a great Queens of the Stone Age hoodie for ?45. The official stuff is expensive but in my opinion worth it as a reminder of the festival experience.?The village, located between the campsite and arena, had a decent assortment of shops and some bargains to boot if you had a good rummage around. A lot of clothes sellers had similar items, for example novelty hats, printed leggings, band t-shirts, humour t-shirts, face paints, piercings, jewellery, cheap sunglasses and fancy dress. Most prices were similar but shopping around could lead to finding a good offer. I spotted a rack of colourful ponchos, military gear, a lot of spiked helmets, and in one place a spiky bra!

Some of the brands on sale included Iron Fist, Distubia, Hell Bunny and Voodoo Vixen; Impericon had their own stand, but unfortunately Drop Dead were not selling this year. Festival clothing isn?t always the best value, but if you are looking for particular brands having a browse on the Internet beforehand can be useful. Also, I got a lovely skirt for ?5 from a bargain rack and a hat for ?1, very happy with those finds!

Layout

The layout of Download does take some getting used to, particularly after camping only five minutes away from the arena at Sonisphere 2011. Between the campsite areas and music arena is the village, an area dedicated to food vans and shops, and also the Donnington park racetrack. The average walker will get to the arena within 20-30 minutes via the racetrack, so planning when to leave in order to watch a band is vitally important. On the first day it felt a bit daunting, the sheer size of a festival being made up of over 90,000 people, but soon enough even I, having a terrible sense of direction, was confident with finding my way. There were security people, signs, maps and information booths on hand for any problems, and also sometimes following the crowd proved useful. There was a fair amount of slow zombie style walking between bands and especially when getting back to camp at the end of the night, but this is par for the course with giant festivals.

Atmosphere

A few people might still be surprised to hear this but metal-heads are, on the whole, very friendly people and this was reflected in Download 2013?s welcoming atmosphere. I experienced no hassle, not even in the biggest crowds whilst on my own, and even in mosh pits people would look after each other. The festival community do so, no matter who?s involved, because they want everybody to share a good experience. Wherever the eye roamed I could see people with face paint, vibrant hair, masks and wacky costumes having fun, lazing on the grass or going crazy for their favourite bands.

Image5

Download was a blast. Just look at this happy camper!

The festival atmosphere is often described as magical, and this reviewer?s experience is no exception. As well as the music, the camaraderie and buzzing excitement in the air really made Download 2013 worth attending. Of course, there will always be people who don?t mind ruining somebody else?s time, for example, there were more than a few bottles flying around at high speeds during the 45 minute wait before Rammstein came on and I was hit a few times by crowd surfers (though some people need to crowd surf out for health reasons) but these people are everywhere in life and the small risks were well worth taking for an otherwise excellent weekend.

So there you have it, if you want a fun, friendly festival experience whilst enjoying the music look no further than Download.

(AP) ? Cautious optimism over corporate earnings sent the stock market higher Monday.

U.S. companies start reporting their second-quarter results this week, led by aluminum producer Alcoa, the first company in the Dow Jones industrial average to announce results. Other major companies reporting include JPMorgan and Wells Fargo.

Analysts predict that earnings growth for companies in the Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 3 percent in the second quarter. While growth is down from 5 percent in the first quarter, earnings are still expected to reach record levels.

Investors and traders will search for evidence that companies are increasing revenues, not just cutting costs to boost profits. Sales growth is predicted to fall 0.3 percent in the second quarter.

"We'll be looking to see where revenue comes in," said Jim Dunigan, an executive vice president of investments at PNC.

After the market closed Monday, Alcoa reported a wider second-quarter loss due to weak aluminum prices.

Alcoa lost $119 million, or 11 cents per share, in the April-through-June quarter. That compared with a loss of $2 million, or break-even on a per-share basis, a year earlier.

Alcoa fell 5 cents, or 0.6 percent, to $7.87 in after-hours trading.

The Dow rose 88.85 points, or 0.6 percent, to close at 15,224.69. The Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 8.57 points, or 0.5 percent, to end at 1,640.46.

Dell was among the big gainers in the S&P 500 index. An advisory firm recommended that company shareholders support a plan to take the computer company private. Founder Michael Dell and Silver Lake Partners have offered to buy Dell for $24.4 billion, or $13.65 a share. Dell rose 41 cents, or 3.1 percent, to $13.44.

The Russell 2000 index, an index of small-company stocks, closed at an all-time high 1,009.25. The index past the 1,000 mark for the first time Friday and has gained 18.8 percent this year, a sign that investors are more willing to take on risk.

In other trading, the Nasdaq composite rose 5.45, or 0.2 percent, to 3,484.83, the smallest gain of the major indexes.

The index was weighed down by a slump in Intel. The chipmaker fell after a Citigroup analyst wrote that weak PC sales and waning demand for smartphones would stunt the company's growth. Intel, which makes up 2.2 percent of the Nasdaq, fell 88 cents, or 3.6 percent, to $23.18.

Other chipmakers also declined. Qualcomm dropped 96 cents, or 1.6 percent, to $59.99.

In government bond trading, the yield on the 10-year government note pulled back from a two-year high of 2.74 Friday. It fell to 2.64 percent on Monday.

The yield had jumped after the government reported strong U.S. hiring for June on Friday. Investors believe that the improving jobs market will prompt the Federal Reserve to ease back on its bond-buying program. The Fed is buying $85 billion in bonds each month to keep interest rates low and spur borrowing and investing.

For the first five months of the year stocks moved higher, supported by the backdrop of low interest rates, a recovering housing market and increased hiring. The S&P 500 index gained 17 percent by May 21 and stood at a record 1,669.

But the stock market pulled back when Fed chairman Ben Bernanke said that the central bank might consider easing its stimulus.

The S&P 500 dropped as low as 1,573 on June 24, about 5.7 percent below its record close.

Since then stocks have gradually recouped losses as investors appear to be getting more comfortable with higher interest rates.

"Interest rates, even though they've risen, are still incredibly low," said Brent Schutte, a market strategist at BMO Private Bank. "Right now, increases in rates are a good thing because it means the economy is doing a little bit better."

The rising rates are still making bond investors nervous though.

Investors pulled a net $900 million from U.S. stock funds for the week ending June 26, but they withdrew $28.1 billion from bond funds over the same period, according to data from the Investment Company Institute.

That sell-off may boost stocks as investors look to reinvest their proceeds from bonds.

In commodities trading, the price of oil was little changed at $103.14 a barrel. The price of gold rose $22.20, or 1.8 percent, to $1,234.90 an ounce.

Among other stocks making big moves today;

Priceline rose $33.47, or 3.9 percent, to $888.60 after investment bank Morgan Stanley raised its price target for the online bookings company. Analysts at the bank believe that Priceline can climb as high as $1,010 as it continues to grow internationally and worries about shrinking profits dissipate.

Shooting of pro-Mursi protesters deepens Egypt crisis

By Tom Perry and Maggie Flick

CAIRO (Reuters) - At least 15 people were killed in Cairo on Monday, medical sources said, when the Muslim Brotherhood said shots were fired at supporters of deposed Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi near the military building where he is being held.

The bloodshed deepened Egypt's political crisis, escalating the struggle between the army, which overthrew Mursi last Wednesday after mass demonstrations demanding his resignation, and the Brotherhood, which has denounced what it called a coup.

The military said "a terrorist group" tried to storm the Republican Guard compound and one army officer had been killed and 40 wounded. Soldiers returned fire when they were attacked by armed assailants, a military source said.

The Brotherhood's official spokesman, Gehad El-Haddad, who is at a pro-Mursi sit-in at a mosque near the scene, said 37 Mursi supporters had been killed.

He said shooting broke out in the early morning while Islamists were praying and staging a peaceful sit-in outside the Republican Guard barracks.

"We call on all patriotic brave Egyptians 2 join us @... sitin to defend country from conspiratorial traitors of military coup," he said in a Twitter message.

As an immediate consequence, the ultra-conservative Islamist Nour party, which initially supported the military intervention, said it was withdrawing from stalled negotiations to form an interim government for the transition to fresh elections.

Al Jazeera's Egypt news channel broadcast footage of what appeared to be five men killed in the violence, and medics applying cardiopulmonary resuscitation to an unconscious man at a makeshift clinic at a nearby pro-Mursi sit-in.

A Reuters television producer at the scene saw first aid helpers attempting mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on a dying man. Wounded people were being ferried to the field hospital on motorbikes, given first aid treatment and taken away in ambulances.

The military overthrew Mursi on Wednesday after mass nationwide demonstrations led by youth activists demanding his resignation. The Brotherhood denounced the intervention as a coup and vowed peaceful resistance.

ROADBLOCKS

Military vehicles sealed off traffic in a wide area around the Rabaa Adawia mosque where Mursi supporters led by senior Brotherhood leaders have been staging protests since his ouster.

The army also closed two of the main bridges across the Nile River with armored vehicles, witnesses said.

Talks on forming a new government were already in trouble before Monday's shooting, after the Nour party rejected two liberal-minded candidates for prime minister proposed by interim head of state Adli Mansour.

Nour, Egypt's second biggest Islamist party, which is vital to give the new authorities a veneer of Islamist backing, said it had withdrawn from the negotiations in protest at what it called the "massacre at the Republican Guard (compound)".

"We've announced our withdrawal from all tracks of negotiations as a first response," party spokesman Nader Bakar said on Facebook.

The military can ill afford a lengthy political vacuum at a time of violent upheaval and economic stagnation in the Arab world's largest nation of 84 million people.

Scenes of running street battles between pro- and anti-Mursi demonstrators in Cairo, Alexandria and cities across the country have alarmed Egypt's allies, including key aid donors the United States and Europe, and Israel, with which Egypt has had a U.S.-backed peace treaty since 1979.

At least 35 people died in violence on Friday and Saturday in fresh turmoil that came two and a half years after autocratic ruler Hosni Mubarak was toppled in a 2011 uprising.

While Sunday was calmer, the sight of huge crowds numbering hundreds of thousands gathering in different parts of Cairo was a reminder of the risks of further instability.

The army appeared to be counting on exhaustion and the onset of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan from Tuesday to wear down the Brotherhood protesters.

However, even before Monday's incident, many were determined to hold out and die for their cause if necessary.

Hanim Ahmad Ali Al-Sawi, 55, spent Sunday encamped outside the Republican Guard barracks where Mursi has been helped since the coup.

"We will not leave until Mursi returns. Otherwise we'll die as martyrs," she said, as soldiers and policemen looked on from behind barbed wire. She had been there with her five children for the last three days in spite of the scorching heat.

BITTER BLOW

For many Islamists, the overthrow of Egypt's first freely elected president was a bitter reversal that raised fears of a return to the suppression they endured for decades under autocratic rulers like Mubarak.

On the other side of the political divide, hundreds of thousands of Mursi's opponents poured into Cairo's Tahrir Square, the cradle of the popular uprising to oust him.

On Sunday night, a carnival atmosphere took hold, and a troupe of folk musicians played darabukka drums and mizmar flutes as others danced and let off fireworks.

The army has denied it staged a coup, saying instead it was merely enforcing the will of the people after mass protests on June 30 calling for Mursi's resignation.

People blamed the Brotherhood for economic stagnation and said it was trying to take over every part of the state, an accusation the movement stringently denies.

Washington has not condemned the military takeover or called it a coup, prompting suspicion within the Brotherhood that it tacitly supports the overthrow.

Obama has ordered a review to determine whether annual U.S. assistance of $1.5 billion, most of which goes to the Egyptian military, should be cut off as required by law if a country's military ousts a democratically elected leader.

But U.S. lawmakers said that was unlikely to happen.

"We should continue to support the military, the one stabilizing force in Egypt that I think can temper down the political feuding," U.S. Representative Mike Rogers said on CNN's "State of the Union".

Egypt can ill afford to lose foreign aid. The country appears headed for a looming funding crunch unless it can quickly access money from overseas. The local currency has lost 11 percent of its value since late last year.

The governor of Egypt's central bank, Hisham Ramez, flew to Abu Dhabi on Sunday, officials at Cairo airport said, following Egyptian media reports Cairo was seeking financial aid from Gulf states after Mursi's removal.

Egypt's foreign reserves fell $1.12 billion in June to $14.92 billion, representing less than three months of imports.

Only about half are in the form of cash or in securities that can easily be spent, and the IMF considers three months to be the minimum safe cushion for reserves.

What Could Be More All-American than a Baseball Contract?

NY MetsThere have been a few articles over the past few days about Bobby Bonilla's contract with the New York Mets. ?Bonilla played for the Mets until he retired in 2001. ?At that point, he still had $5.9 million outstanding on his contract. ?Rather than giving Bonilla a lump sum payment, the Mets opted to pay him start paying him in 2011. ?The Mets are to pay Bonilla a total of $29.8 million over 25 years. ?

Cork Gaines of the Business Insider explains?that this was a good deal for the Mets in terms of their bottom line on the Bonilla contract. ?Assuming an 8% rate of return, the long-term payout deal is worth $10 million less over time to Bonilla than would a one-time payout. ?And, because the Mets had the use for teny years of the $5.9 million that they owed Bonilla until the payouts began in 2011, they were able to invest that money, and the come out at the other end looking pretty good, assuming an 8% annual return on investment and ignoring all other issues, like the tax consequences of the transaction. ?

In the New York Times, Jeff Z. Klein and Mary Pilon are decidedly less positive about the Bonilla contract, but they dutifully report that all parties involved stil believe they acted in their own best interest. ?The Times provides some details missing from the Buinsss Insider report. ?The Mets needed to get Bonilla off their books and out of their clubhouse so that they could free up space under the MLB salary cap and free themselves from an underperforming player who had become a distraction. ?

We have expressed our view before?that multi-million dollar, multi-year deals for veteran ballplayers are irrational. ??With baseball mania for statistics, it ought to be possible to fine-tune baseball contracts with incentives so that players actually get paid for performance (you know, like CEOs) rather than getting paid for hitting .250 when they are 35 because they hit .320 when they were 29.

Luke Shaw to Snub London Giants for New Contract at Southampton

Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino believes Luke Shaw will refuse offers from Chelsea and Tottenham and extend his contract with the club.

The Sun believes Shaw will sign a new five-year deal worth ?25,000 per week; the new contract will keep Shaw at St Mary's till 2018. The teen is expected to put pen to paper after his 18th birthday, on 12 July.

The 17 year old left-back played an important role for the Saints last season, making 22 Premier League starts. Pochettino is keen to hold on to key players for the new season and believes they share his vision for the club.

"We have total confidence in keeping all our valuable players. They believe in this project and want to stay here," the Argentine explained.

Speaking in January, Shaw confirmed he was aware of the interest in his services but insisted he was keen to remain with Southampton for a while longer. The defender emphasised the need to concentrate on developing his technical and physical abilities and also said he realised the benefits of playing for the club.

"I will be committing my future to Southampton. I'm not going anywhere. I think Southampton is the place to be for young kids like me. I'm playing in the Premier League for the first team and that is all anyone wants to be doing, so I just want to carry on," the former England U17 International said.

"If you look back over the years, Adam (Lallana) has come through the youth system and now he is the captain of the first team, and [then there is] Prowsey (James Ward-Prowse). That is what I want to be doing. We have a lot of trust in our youth and there are more players coming through next year, so hopefully we will just carry on going," Shaw concluded.

Southampton open their 2013/14 Premier League campaign at the Hawthorns on 17 August, before hosting Sunderland the following weekend and travelling to Norwich City for the final game of the month.

Meanwhile, the Saints' ambitious boss has confirmed interest in a number of summer targets, some of whom have been linked with top clubs across Europe. One of the proposed signings is Brazil striker Leandro Damiao, who was a long-term target for Tottenham, until recently.

Use your own number on local rates when traveling with Roamer app for Android and iOS

Roamer is a cleverly designed app for Android and iOS that aims for savings while roaming abroad. Those prices per minute or per kilobyte can be pretty excruciating as we all know, but the service forwards the calls through your number to a local SIM card so you pay local rates.

The only thing you need to do is activate roaming credits from the app in installments of $13, $16, $39 and $65, then get a local SIM from any kiosk when you land. Data is only needed briefly when you activate the card with Roamer and when you initiate the call, and these will be local mobile data rates applied, so nothing exorbitant.

The savings are enormous, but above all the call ID is your own motherland number, so you don't have to let everyone know your local cell, or have people wondering who's calling from Europe in this ungodly hour. App versions for BlackBerry and Windows Phone are in the works, too.

Morsi rejects Egyptian military ultimatum, will make own attempt at reconciliation

Protesters against the Morsi regime remain encamped in Tahrir Square, with more demonstrations planned.

President Mohamed Morsi clung to office on Tuesday after rebuffing an army ultimatum to force a resolution to Egypt's political crisis, and the ruling Muslim Brotherhood sought to mass its supporters to defend him.

But the Islamist leader looked increasingly isolated, with ministers resigning, the liberal opposition refusing to talk to him and the armed forces, backed by millions of protesters in the street, giving him until Wednesday to agree to share power.

In a defiant 2 a.m. statement, Morsi's office said the president had not been consulted before the armed forces chief-of-staff set a 48-hour deadline for a power-sharing deal and would pursue his own plan for national reconciliation.

Newspapers across the political spectrum saw the military ultimatum as a turning point. "Last 48 hours of Muslim Brotherhood rule," the opposition daily El Watan declared. "Egypt awaits the army," said the state-owned El Akhbar.

The president's office said Morsi was meeting chief-of-staff General Abdel Fateh al-Sisi and Prime Minister Hisham Kandil for the second straight day.

The confrontation has pushed the most populous Arab nation closer to the brink amid a deepening economic crisis two years after the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak, raising concern in Washington, Europe and neighbouring Israel.

Military sources said troops were preparing to deploy on the streets of Cairo and other cities if necessary to prevent clashes between rival political factions.

Protesters remained encamped overnight in Cairo's central Tahrir Square and protest leaders called for another mass rally later in the day, dubbed a "Tuesday of persistence", to try to force the president out.

Senior Muslim Brotherhood leaders branded the military ultimatum a "coup", backed by a threat that the generals will otherwise impose their own road map for the nation.

The Brotherhood's political wing, the Freedom and Justice Party, called on supporters to stage mass counter-demonstrations to "defend constitutional legitimacy and express their refusal of any coup", raising fears of violence.

One FJP leader urged "free revolutionaries" who supported Morsi to prepare for martyrdom.

    HEED THE CALL

Sisi delighted Morsi's opponents on Monday by effectively ordering the president to heed the demands of the street. It took the president's office nine hours to respond with a statement indicating he would go his own way.

"The president of the republic was not consulted about the statement issued by the armed forces," it said. "The presidency confirms that it is going forward on its previously plotted path to promote comprehensive national reconciliation ... regardless of any statements that deepen divisions between citizens."

Describing civilian rule as a great gain from the revolution of 2011, Morsi said he would not let the clock be turned back. Egypt's first freely elected leader, he has been in office for just a year. But many Egyptians are impatient with his economic management and inability to win the trust of non-Islamists.

Morsi spoke to US President Barack Obama by phone on Monday, stressing that Egypt was moving forward with a peaceful democratic transition based on the law and constitution.

The White House said Obama, visiting Tanzania, encouraged him to respond to the protests and "underscored that the current crisis can only be resolved through a political process".

    RESIGNATIONS

Six ministers who are not Brotherhood members have tendered their resignations since Sunday's huge demonstrations, including foreign minister, Mohamed Kamel Amr. The cabinet spokesman also resigned, the state news agency MENA said.

Kandil chaired a session of the rump cabinet without the key ministers of defence and the interior. Justice Minister Ahmed Suleiman denied reports that the government had resigned.

In another blow to the president, Egypt's top appeals court upheld the dismissal of the prosecutor general appointed by Morsi last year - a major bugbear to the liberal opposition.

The court removed public prosecutor Talaat Abdallah, accused of using his position to pursue journalists, artists and critics of the president while turning a blind eye to human rights abuses. It reinstated his predecessor.

Senior Brotherhood politician Mohamed El-Beltagy said the return of the Mubarak-era prosecutor was part of a creeping coup and he expected the High Committee for Elections to meet within hours to consider annulling the 2012 presidential election.

"We are therefore facing a coup against the entire revolution and not just the legitimacy of the elections and the constitution," Beltagy said on the FJP's Facebook page.

"So will the free revolutionaries allow this coup? Or will they stop it even at the price of joining a new martyrs' brigade, following the martyrs of the previous revolution?"

Compounding a sense of an administration disintegrating even as the president hangs on, Morsi's military adviser, US-trained former chief-of-staff General Sami Enan, also resigned.

El-Watan quoted senior General Adel El-Mursi as saying that if there were no agreement among political leaders to hold early presidential elections, the alternative could involve "a return to revolutionary legitimacy".

Under that scenario, the sole functioning chamber of parliament, the Islamist-dominated Shura Council, would be dissolved, the Islamist-tinged constitution enacted under Morsi would be scrapped, and a presidential council would rule by decree until fresh elections could be held under new rules, he was quoted as saying. That is largely the opposition position.

Highlighting the huge scale of anti-Morsi protests, an opposition TV station broadcast aerial footage of vast crowds thronging Cairo's central Tahrir Square, spilling over a wide adjoining area and stretching across the Nile bridges. The army used helicopters to monitor the crowds on Sunday and Monday.

World powers are looking on anxiously, including the United States, which has long funded the Egyptian army as a key component in the security of Washington's ally Israel.

General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, spoke to Sisi, his Egyptian counterpart, on Monday. It is unclear how far the military has informed, or coordinated with, its US sponsors but an Egyptian official said a coup could not succeed without U.S. approval.

The United Nations Human Rights office called on Morsi to listen to the demands of the people and engage in a "serious national dialogue" but also said: "Nothing should be done that would undermine democratic processes."

A senior European diplomat said that if the army were to go further and remove Morsi by force, the international community would have no alternative but to condemn the toppling of a democratically elected president.

Yasser El-Shimy, Egypt analyst at the International Crisis Group, said the army ultimatum had hardened positions on either side, making it very difficult to find a constitutional way out of the crisis - for which Morsi might have used decree powers.

"It will have to override the constitution and wage a full coup," Shimy said of the army. "Things could deteriorate very rapidly from there, either through confrontations on the street, or international sanctions.

"Morsi is calling their bluff, saying to them, 'if you are going to do this, you will have to do it over my dead body'."

    DEADLINES

The coalition that backed Sunday's protests said there was no question of negotiating now with Morsi on the generals' timetable and it was already formulating positions for discussion directly with the army once the 48 hours are up.

In his statement, Sisi insisted that he had the interests of democracy at heart - a still very flawed democracy that Egyptians have been able to practise as a result of the army pushing aside Mubarak in the face of a popular uprising in 2011.

That enhanced the already high standing of the army among Egyptians, and the sight of military helicopters streaming national flags over Cairo's Tahrir Square at sunset, after Sisi had laid down the law, sent huge crowds into a frenzy of cheers.

Among Morsi's allies are groups with more militant pasts, including al-Gamaa al-Islamiya, a sometime associate of al Qaeda, whose men fought Mubarak's security forces for years and who have warned they would not tolerate renewed military rule.

Liberal coalition leaders appointed former U.N. nuclear watchdog Mohamed ElBaradei as their negotiator with the army and are pushing for the senior judge on the constitutional court to replace Morsi as head of state for an interim period, while technocrats - and generals - would administer the country.

A military source said Sisi was keen not to repeat the experience of the 17 months between Mubarak's fall and Morsi's election, when a committee of generals formed a government that proved unpopular as the economy struggled.

The army would prefer a more hands-off approach, supervising government but not running it.

For many Egyptians, fixing the economy is key. Unrest since Mubarak fell has decimated tourism and investment and state finances are in poor shape, drained by extensive subsidy regimes and struggling to provide regular supplies of fuel.

The Cairo bourse, reopening after a holiday, shot up nearly 5 percent after the army's move.

Just because you can reach me 24/7, doesn't mean you should!! - Talk Mobile

It's a phrase we've all likely heard some time, possibly even direct at ourselves: "You have to know when to stop." The advice applied to ice cream, beer, risqu? jokes, and physical exertion can also apply to mobile technology. With these connected devices rarely out of arm's reach, it's sometimes difficult to know when to stop.

There are situations where any reasonable person would admit that using a smartphone would be inappropriate, but there's a huge gray area of personal judgement when it comes to the rest of life. How do we make the call between answering the digital siren call of our smartphones and giving our undivided attention what's happening in the real world right in front of us?

That digital siren call has somebody on the other end, though, a real person flesh and blood just like you. Do they have the right to your undivided attention as well? Do they even have the right to be beckoning for your attention in the first place?

Mobile technology and the internet have advanced so rapidly that we're literally making up the answers as we go along. What are the right answers?

Apple is rumored to be working on a smart watch that would run on a version of the operating system used by its iPhone and iPad. The company has not confirmed those rumors, but CEO Tim Cook has hinted that it may be developing a wearable computing device such as a wristwatch.

Applying for a trademark in Japan isn't proof of Apple's intentions. The company based in Cupertino, California, has many patents for devices it will never produce.
