The New York Times reports the Affordable Care Act was upheld by U.S. Supreme Court in June, signifiying what many hope will be the end of our reputation as the only rich country with large numbers of uninsured people.
It's a milestone in our history, but most of us are still in the dark about how exactly these new reforms will affect us. With open enrollment deadlines for insurance providers inching ever closer, now is a good time to finally get a grasp on what you can expect from new healthcare reform laws.?
To help make sense of it all, Consumer Reports released a free online brochure titled,??Health Reform: The Seven Things You Need to Know,"? Explained in simple language, the guide provides the most important elements of new healthcare reform initiatives,?according to a?company?press release.
Some of the most dramatically different benefits that consumers can expect include a ban on insurance companies canceling your plan if you get sick, or using your pre-existing condition as a reason to refuse you coverage. In addition, insurance companies are obligated to provide subscribers with better preventative care; services like cancer screenings and immunizations have to be made available at no cost by new private healthcare plans.

The guide also explains one of the policy's biggest changes?mandatory healthcare coverage for those who can afford it?which will be rolled out in 2014.
