1. Volleyball court is 18 metre long and 9 metre wide and divided into 9 metre * 9 metre halves by a one metre wide net.
2. Volleyball is spherical, made of leather or synthetic leather and has a circumference of 65-67 centimetres, weight of 260 gram.
3. It can be played both indoor as well as outdoors.
4. In volejbal, each team consists of six players and both of the teams are separated by a net. Players of each of the two teams try to score points by attempts of grounding the ball on opponent's courts.
5. A player of one team serves the ball or starts a rally from behind the back line of the court, over the net to opponent's court and thus a rally gets started.
6. Serving means releasing the ball and then hitting with arm or hand outside the prescribed area of the court while jumping by one of the player. 7. Any of the teams can touch the ball at most three times before delivering the ball over the net to opponent's court and any individual should not touch the ball twice consecutively.
8. Any rally can be won if any of the teams succeed in grounding the ball in opponent's court or the team commits any foul like catching or throwing the ball, four or more consecutive contacts with the ball made by the player of the same team, touching the net, while serving foot crossing the boundary or grounding the ball outside the prescribed area of the opponent's court.
9. The team who wins the rally is being awarded a point and gains the privilege of serving the next ball. Any volejbal match is usually a five set affair.
10. Depending upon the tactics, different techniquesevolvedlike spiking orattacking (third contact of any team and hitting it so hard so that opponent may not be able to defend), blocking (actions taken by players standing at the net to stop opponent's shot), passing (without touching delivering the ball between the players of the same team), setting (second contact of any team with the aim of releasing it into air so that it can be hit in the spike move), digging (preventing such a ball which is nearly touching the ground).
11. Depending upon the jobs being performed, the players of any team can be classified into following categories:-
a. Setters
b. Liberos
c. Middle blockers or Middle Hitters
d. Outside hitters or left side hitters
e. Opposite hitters or right side hitters
There are a number of variations on the basic rules of volleyball like sepak takraw, beach ball, throw ball, newcomb ball, foot volleyetc. Some of the notable players over the year are William G. Morgan, Michael O'Hara, Rolf Engen for men and Flo Hyman, Jane Ward for women. Soviet Union won the most number of medals in men's as well as women's volleyball event in summer Olympics over the years.
